What Is Bartitsu?

Bartitsu is a martial art that comes from the Victorian era when access to Japan was just starting to open up.  This allowed JuJitsu to make its way to the west where it was incorporated into one of the first mixed martial arts.  Adding pugilism and Savate for striking, as well as the use of improvised weapons, Bartitsu was designed to help gentlemen defend themselves in the streets.  Over the last century the streets may have changed, but the core concepts of surviving them remain the same.  Over eight weeks we will introduce you to the four key elements of Bartitsu.  You will learn the basics of street boxing, become comfortable with your first few kicks, get a good grounding in standing grappling and learn how to use a walking stick for self-defence.  This will put you in a good position to move over to the main class and further your development there if you choose.

Some good reasons why you should come along and give this course a try:

  • Learn a martial art that is designed for everyday people
  • Bartitsu is designed to be easy to learn and effective
  • Learn self-defence in a supportive group and make new friends
  • Bartitsu was developed in the Victorian era and as such is one of the earliest Mixed Martial Arts
  • Learn a martial art and then show off to the public at our numerous displays
